Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) Overview
Financed by the Government of Japan, the ADB-JSP awards approximately 135 graduate scholarships annually for master's studies in economics, business, science, technology, and development-related fields. Available at 29 designated partner institutions across 10 countries in Asia and the Pacific, the program equips scholars from developing member countries to drive economic and social progress in their home nations upon graduation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship & Residency: Must be a national of an ADB borrowing member country and Japanese ODA-eligible nation, currently living and working in their home country. (Must not hold dual citizenship in a developed country).
- Work Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of full-time post-graduate professional work experience at the time of application.
- Academic Background: Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a superior academic record and an unconditional admission offer from a designated partner institution.
- Age Limit: Maximum 35 years old at the time of application (exceptions may apply for senior officials upon endorsement).
- Return Commitment: Must commit to returning and working in their home country for at least two (2) years after graduation.
- Exclusions: Executive Directors, management, staff, consultants, and close relatives of ADB or designated institutions are ineligible. Current graduate students or those residing/working abroad are also ineligible.

How to Apply
- Select an approved Master's program at an official ADB-JSP Designated Partner Institution.
- Request institutional application materials and download the official ADB-JSP Information Sheet.
- Submit your academic program application directly to the partner institution along with the completed ADB-JSP application form and income/work verification documents.
- The institution evaluates academic entry, creates a shortlist, and submits candidates to the ADB for final selection and approval by the Japanese Executive Director.
- Successful awardees are notified directly by their chosen host university.
